Urgent repairs are sought on a footpath outside a busy Laois town's supermarket, with complaints received that it is a trip hazard.

A Portlaoise Municipal District councillor is urging Laois County Council to fix the path outside Mulhall's SuperValu in Lyster Square.

Cllr Barry Walsh tabled a motion to their February council meeting requesting urgent repairs.

"I have received a number of complaints that it is a potential trip hazard, where people are coming off the path from the Post Office.

"Often the answer that comes back is 'we don't have enough funding'," he said, asking for any update on a recent combined motion tabled by all the Portlaoise councillors asking for a dedicated budget to fix footpaths.

"We don't have enough money in our discretionary budgets," Cllr Walsh said.

"There has been a great job done in Lyster Square at the bank, are we moving to another phase to deal with the section of path at the far end?" he asked.

The reply from area engineer was that the path would be examined and fixed if necessary, to be funded out of the councillor's annual discretionary budgets of €25,000 each.

Simon Walton said that a second wave of works is going to happen in Lyster Square.

"Other areas of Lyster Square will be upgraded to a similar standard," he said.
