Laois GAA coach's opposing Wexford manager also a politician

Two politicians and intercounty managers shook hands at the end of the Wexford Laois intercounty game which led to Justin McNulty being suspended from his party in Northern Ireland.

John Hegarty is the manager of the Wexford senior footballers since 2022. He is also a serving member of Wexford County Council since 2009 and is also Mayor of Wexford elected in June 2023.

The Fine Gael biog says he is representative was Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council between 2017-18.  Having previously represented the Gorey District on the Council, he now represents Wexford Borough District.

Fine Gael says he created the Wexford Ambassador Programme, the aim of which is to get Wexford people to champion Wexford when they are abroad, in terms of tourism and business development. Ambassadors include Tadhg Furlong, Billy Walsh and Dermot O’Leary.

He was also instrumental in establishing the NZEB Center of Excellence in the county, working in conjunction with the United Nations and also in establishing a campus of The American College, Georgia Southern University in Wexford Town.

As a former Wexford senior footballer, Fine Gael say he remains "heavily involved in Wexford GAA", in both Hurling and Football, as well as working with local communities to develop their facilities.

His day job is deputy principal as Wexford CBS. Fine Gael says is happily married with four children.
