Healthy clubs challenge brings welcome funding boost to Laois Camogie club

A Laois camogie club is celebrating after landing a significant boost to its funds as part of a nationwide health initiative.

O'Moore's Camogie Club has been awarded €2,500 after being drawn as one of the provincial winners in the Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs Steps Challenge.

The challenge, which ran from January 7 to February 11, encouraged clubs and communities across the country to get out walking in support of their local GAA Healthy Club. The goal for each participating club was to collectively reach 4,000 kilometres over the five-week period.

O’Moore’s Camogie Club was one of 594 clubs, from more than 1,000 that signed up, to hit the 4,000km target and secure entry into the provincial prize draw. The Laois club’s efforts were rewarded when they were selected as one of three Leinster winners.

In total, 12 clubs nationwide, three from each province, received €2,500, bringing the overall prize fund to €30,000.

Almost 39,000 participants took part in this year’s challenge, helping to rack up an extraordinary 6.9 million kilometres across the four provinces, the equivalent of roughly 18 trips to the moon and back.

The Leinster winners were O’Moore’s Camogie Club (Laois), Dunlavin GAA (Wicklow) and Kilmessan Hurling and Camogie Club (Meath). They were joined by provincial winners from Ulster, Munster and Connacht, reflecting the strong nationwide engagement with the initiative.

The Irish Life GAA Healthy Clubs Steps Challenge continues to promote physical activity, community spirit and wellbeing within GAA clubs, and O’Moore’s success ensures that Laois is firmly represented among this year’s national winners.

Club officials are expected to use the €2,500 donation to further support health and wellbeing initiatives within the club and wider community, adding another positive chapter to camogie in the county.
