Waterways Ireland has lodged a planning application with Laois County Council to carry out repair works on the Barrow Navigation.
The work includes bank repairs and bank strengthening, maintenance dredging and back drain cleaning along the river in the townlands of Clogrenan, Crossneen and Ballyhide.
The maintenance programme is scheduled to take place over a five year period and Waterways Ireland has also submitted separate planning applications to Kildare and Carlow County Councils for work to be carried out along the navigation in the various counties.
The proposed works in Laois include the provision of a temporary access road through an adjoining agricultural field linking Leighlin Road with the Barrow Trackway, in order to facilitate the maintenance dredging.
A spokesperson for Waterways Ireland said: "All of the works seeking permission would historically have been undertaken on the Barrow Navigation by Waterways Ireland and its predecessor authorities without the need for planning permission. Due to recent changes in environmental and planning legislation, certain aspects of this normal maintenance work now require consent from the relevant planning authority.
"Waterways Ireland is now required, in certain instances, to apply to the relevant planning authority for planning consent to undertake maintenance activities."
Submissions on the plans can be made to the local authority by March 13 with a decision due by planners on April 3.
