Laois town facing water outages 'three times in a week'

Technical difficulties with a water treatment plant caused unplanned shutdowns

Technical difficulties with a water treatment plant in Laois has resulted in a number of unplanned shutdowns in recent days with water outages causing 'significant issues' for residents and businesses.

Uisce Éireann told Leinster Express/Laois Live that repairs to the Graiguecullen Water Treatment Plant are being conducted as quickly as possible.

"There are ongoing technical difficulties at the Graiguecullen Water Treatment Plant which have resulted in a number of  unplanned shutdowns.  Repairs are being conducted as quickly and as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption and ensure a continuous water supply to homes and businesses," said a spokesperson.

"We understand the inconvenience an unplanned outage can have on our customers and appreciate their patience as we work to return normal water supply as quickly as possible."

Labour local election candidate Eoin Barry said the water outages in Killeshin and Graiguecullen are causing significant issues.
He has called on Uisce Éireann  to improve their communication with residents and for increased investment in water and waste management infrastructure in the municipal district.

“Three times this week residents in Graiguecullen, Killeshin have experienced water outages with no warning or prior communication," said Mr Barry.

“This is unacceptable to residents and causing significant issues for people who want to go about their daily lives. In addition business, schools and farmers are all facing issues as a result. Uisce Éireann need to improve their communication and let residents know what the issue is.

“It’s clear that increased investment is needed in water infrastructure in this municipal district. A couple of weeks ago in the swan, Wolfhill and surrounding areas residents were being warned about a low water level in the reservoir. Despite one of the wettest winters and springs in recent years.

“This would be somewhat understandable if it was a once off issue but it happens every year and as we can see in Graiguecullen this week there are clear issues with the underlying infrastructure in the municipal district.
“This is without even mentioning the decades long issue residents in Ballybrittas have had with connecting to sewage mains."

Uisce Éireann added that the utility company is committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.

They advised customers who experience pressure issues to contact its customer care helpline on 1800 278 278 and customers can also contact them on X  @IWCare with any queries.
