Scores of households and businesses in Laois may be without power until later this week as the ESB works to repair storm damage.

Storm Darragh knocked trees and powerlines and caused widespread outages across the county at the weekend.

Although the largest faults in the county have now been repaired, pockets of outages remain across Laois.

According to ESB Networks, 47 customers in the Portarlington area remain without power since Saturday morning. The estimated time for restoring the power is Wednesday at 7pm. A second fault impacting 45 customers in Portarlington town is  expected to be restored by 5pm on Tuesday.

In Portlaoise, 15 customers are without power and the estimated restoration time is Tuesday at 7pm. Another 11 customers in Coolbanagher should have power restored by 5.30pm on Tuesday.

In Mountmellick, there are 14 customers who can expect power to be restored by 7pm on  Tuesday while in Mountrath 27 customers should have power returned by 6pm today but 11 customers impacted by a second fault are estimated to have power returned by 7pm on Tuesday.

On Sunday afternoon, the ESB said approximately 55,000 homes, farms and businesses remained without power following extremely strong and gusty winds associated with Storm Darragh which caused widespread and extensive damage to the electricity network across the country. ESB Networks teams had restored power to 340,000 customers impacted by Storm Darragh

The ESB acknowledged the disruption to family and commercial life and thanked customers across the country, especially those who remain without power, for their patience as crews worked to safely restore power.

The ESB said “If you come across fallen wires or damaged electricity network, never, ever touch or approach these as they are LIVE and extremely dangerous. Please report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1800 372 999.”
