Funeral details have been announced for a popular musician who died after being struck by a car in Abbeyleix on Wednesday evening. 

Jeremiah Anthony (Tony) Kavanagh of  Thornberry, Abbeyleix, tragically died in hospital shortly after a collision on Main Street in his home town on Wednesday, January 28. 

His death has cast a dark cloud over the town where he was known for his humour and his talent for playing the saxophone. 

Local Councillor and friend John Joe Fennelly paid tribute to Mr Kavanagh earlier this week. “He was a character, a lovely, lovely fella and he will be sadly missed around the place,” he said. 

“He was a jazz player. He used to play music for senior citizen’s parties and that,” said Cllr Fennelly. 

“It’s a desperate shock this morning. People are in shock,” added Cllr Fennelly. 

Mr Kavanagh is predeceased by his parents Jerry and Joan and his sister Marian.

Sadly missed by his sisters Carmen and Geraldine, brothers Val and Sean, brothers-in-law Henk and Patsy, sister-in-law Chris, nephews P.J., Eoghan, Sean and Liam, nieces Zita and Orla, grandnieces, aunts and uncles extended family neighbours and friends.

Lying in repose on Saturday at the chapel of Repose adjoining the Church of the Most Holy Rosary, Abbeyleix from 6.30pm to 8pm with prayers at 6.30pm. Requiem Mass on Sunday at 11am. Followed by a private family cremation. Rest in Peace. House Strictly Private.
