A drone previously seized at an Irish prison and Portlaoise Prison
Laois Gardaí seized drugs and mobile phones and two drones as they thwarted suspected criminal efforts to smuggle items into prisons in Portlaoise.
“Gardaí in Portlaoise, supported by the Divisional Drugs Unit and Detective Unit, recently carried out a successful operation targeting the use of drones to deliver contraband into the Midlands and Portlaoise Prison complex,” Gardaí said.

On Monday, March 2, Gardaí intercepted a drone believed to be destined for the prison grounds. The drone was carrying a package containing suspected drugs, mobile phones and other prohibited items. A person allegedly controlling the drone was arrested and subsequently charged before the courts.
A day later on Tuesday, March 3, Gardaí said “a second drone, believed to be connected to this activity, was located in close proximity to the prison. This drone also had a package containing contraband material attached."

“These incidents highlight the ongoing efforts by An Garda Síochána, working in partnership with the Irish Prison Service, to prevent the smuggling of drugs, phones and other harmful materials into our prison system,” Gardaí stated.
They said Gardaí in Portlaoise greatly appreciate the continued support of the local community. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity involving drones, particularly in areas close to the prison complex.
If you observe unusual drone activity or suspicious behaviour, please contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100 or any Garda Station or call 999 or 112
“Working together, we can continue to protect our communities and disrupt criminal activity,” they added.
