The children were taken safely from the motorway earlier today

Emergency services from Laois rushed to the scene of a bus fire on the M7 earlier this morning.

“There was a number of children on the bus. They were all evacuated. No injuries,” a Laois Garda spokesperson said.

Laois Gardaí responded to the incident as did fire crews from Rathdowney and Roscrea in Co Tipperary.

The bus fire occurred on the M7 between Junction 21 and 22 near Borris-in-Ossory and the Tipperary border forcing a temporary full closure of the road. The fire is suspected to have started due to a mechanical fault.

Gardaí placed diversion along the motorway while the children were safely taken from the road.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland(TII) said Eastbound lanes remain closed this afternoon but the Westbound lanes have reopened.

The incident has caused delays and tailbacks for motorists.
