Snowfalls in Laois herald the start of wintry weather

The Slieve Bloom mountains are covered in snow today, marking the end of unseasonably warm weather

Snowy Slieve Blooms

The Slieve Bloom mountains are snow capped today November 17.

Unexpected flurries of snow swept over north Laois this morning, the first heralding of winter after an unnaturally warm week.

Thick snowfalls swept through Tullamore in Offaly down to Laois around 8am, coating the Slieve Blooms in Alpine beauty and hitting Portarlington and Clonaghadoo.

However it is not set to last, as further blustery showers may fall today but will turn to rain, according to Met Eireann.

Hail or thunder is also forcasted as possible, with highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with strong gusty winds.

Tonight will be frosty in many parts while tomorrow will again be cold with showers giving way to sunshine later in the day.
