Minister for Health Simon Harris is going to visit Portlaoise hospital in the first week in January 2017.
He will also meet staff and management of the hospital, and a deputation of county councillors and TDs.
The news was confirmed today, Monday December 19, at Laois County Council’s monthly meeting by Cathaoirleach Cllr Tom Mulhall. He was given the news over the phone the night before by Laois Minister Charlie Flanagan.
The Health Minister is due to publish a plan on the future of Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise, which was drawn up the the HSE.
A draft plan had proposed a downgrade of the hospital.
