Laois GAA Club hits out against 'dog fouling' on pitches

Following a string of complaints, Abbeyleix GAA club have taken to social media to call out negligent dog owners for allowing their pups to foul the GAA grounds.

The club are appealing to local dog walkers that they do not open the gates into the playing pitches and ball wall to allow their dogs to wander freely and foul.

They have also asked that if there is no bin near, dog walkers bring their poo bags home with them.

"Dog fouling is nearly at epidemic level in the Fr Breen Park and Abbeyleix GAA, St. Lazarians Camogie Abbeyleix Abbeyleix Juvenile Soccer Club Abbeyleix Vitality Hub Abbeyleix Tennis Club Abbeyleix AFC @laoishockeyclub have young members playing in their respective areas and do their best to maintain the area with very limited resources," the club said in a Facebook post.
"Some of the offenders have been captured on the CCTV’s in the Park and these recording are being passed on to Laois County Council for follow up.
"This antisocial behaviour is not acceptable to all users of the park or all of the clubs, groups and care takers of the park who dedicate so much time to maintain this space to a very high standard for all to enjoy.
"As a town we are flying the flag as Gold Medal Tidy Town winners and this type of behaviour jeopardizes the volunteers in their attempts to maintain this status. Please clean up after your pet," the post finished.

"It's a problem around the country, not just Laois," said Abbeyleix Tidy Towns Chairperson Mr Robbie Quinn.

"People don't seem to realise that when dogs are playing there, they could be fouling the grass, and kids are playing and being on tackled onto the ground, it's unsanitary," he said.

Mr Quinn has said that he has seen the video footage of people allowing their dogs to run free on the GAA grounds.

"It's a perennial issue, people just need to be reminded of it," said Mr Quinn.

"As a dog owner myself I know that it is very hard to find somewhere to let the dog off to run, but this is not the space. There's a creche nearby, with prams and little children going through the area. Wheelchair users could also get the dog litter caught in their wheels. It's unfair," Mr Quinn finished.
