The new Independent Ireland party will have a candidate looking for votes in the Portlaoise electoral area at this year's Laois local elections.
Following on from the selection of Patsy Fennell for the Graiguecullen Portarlington district, Colette Byrne, a resident of Ballinakill, has stepped forward to contest for one of the seven seats on offer to represent the Portlaoise Municipal District on Laois County Council.
A statement said that with a long record of community activism, online bereavement support, and local governance, Ms Byrne brings a unique blend of compassion and determination to the forefront of her campaign.
The party says she was born and raised in Laois, so her roots run deep in the local community. It adds that following a personal tragedy, she founded Widow.ie an online platform offering support to those navigating the grieving process.
Her efforts earned her widespread recognition, including a prestigious 'People of the Year Award' in 2018. Her husband Peter was tragically killed in a traffic accident in August 2008, leaving her to rear their three-year-old Kate.
"I am honoured to stand as a candidate in the Portlaoise LEA," Byrne declares. "My experiences have shaped my understanding of the needs of our community, and I am committed to being a voice for positive change."
The party says her platform encompasses a wide range of local and national issues. It's claimed that she advocates for affordable housing, support for local businesses, and the well-being of families and youth in the area.
The party also says she is a staunch advocate for accountability and transparency in governance, aligning closely with the values of Independent Ireland.
Michael Fitzmaurice TD of Independent Ireland expressed his admiration.
"Colette Byrne's dedication to her community and her tireless advocacy for those in need make her an exceptional candidate for Independent Ireland. When we met, I was struck by Colette’s authenticity and desire to make a positive impact in her community, with Colette by our side, we are confident in our ability to bring about meaningful change," he said.
With Independent Ireland as her platform, the party says she vows to be a relentless advocate for Ballinakill, Co. Laois, and its surrounding areas. It says she invites her fellow residents to join her in shaping a brighter future for their community, one built on compassion, integrity, and genuine progress.
Ms Byrne is contesting a district dominated by Portlaoise town. Five of the seven sitting councillors are based in the urban. The district also includes Abbeyleix, Ballyroan and the Rock. MORE BELOW PICTURE.
