Counting in the Laois local election county centre in Portlaoise has adjourned without a candidate being elected.

Returning Officer Donal Kelly announced he would be suspending the process until 11am Sunday at  midnight on Saturday.

He said that the sorting of votes by candidate in the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick electoral area would be completed before the count would be suspended in the early hours of Sunday with counting due to commence on Sunday at 11am.

He said a quantity of votes had yet to be sorted by candidate in the Portlaoise and Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal Districts. Because of this, he said it has been decided to suspend sorting in these areas until Sunday at 11am.

Counting can also officially commence in these areas once the votes have been sorted by candidate.

Mr Kelly said some adjudication has already taken place on doubtful or spoiled votes.

A total of 47 candidate are contesting for 19 seats on Laois County Council. Counting is taking place at the Kea Lew Business Park in Portlaoise.
