Councillor slams 'ridiculous' response to dangerous Laois junction request

Laois County Council HQ Portlaoise

A council response to a query on safety measures at a dangerous Laois junction was branded ‘ridiculous’ at a recent meeting.

Cllr Ben Brennan had requested action to improve safety at the junction in Killeshin at  the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.

He asked “That Laois County Council give an update on the safety measures being put in place in Killeshin Village and at the dangerous junction at the Mall Pub in Killeshin on the R430.”

In a written response read at the meeting, Senior Executive at the Roads Department Paul McLoughlin  stated: “Killeshin Village has previously had additional safety measures installed which are to be added to by the installation of further speed radar signs at the Mall Pub in the coming weeks. Following a period after the installation of these agreed additional measures a review of the R430 through Killeshin Village will be undertaken.”

Cllr Brennan claimed no extra measures  had been put in place.

“I don’t know where these extra measures are being put in,” he said.

Claiming the response was  “ridiculous”, he said no measures have been taken since the radar signs were introduced.

“That answer is not worth the paper it is written on,” he said.

“That is a dangerous junction. I would like more clarity on that,” said Cllr Brennan.

Director of Services Gerry Murphy said he would raise the issue with Mr McLoughlin at the roads department.

Cllr Padraig Fleming agreed with Cllr Brennan and said something needed to be done.

“What Ben is actually saying is that he wants real  measures in there,” he said.
