'Ludicrous situation' with Irish Water at Laois estate

A ‘ludicrous situation’ has arisen in relation to Irish Water at one Laois estate, a council meeting was told.

Sinn Fein Cllr Aidan Mullins had asked in a motion “that Laois County Council advise when the water supply in Bruach na hAbhann in Killeen will be taken in charge by Irish Water.”

In a written response, Senior Engineer in Water Services, Adrian Barrett stated that: “Laois County Council Water Services are currently operating and maintaining the water supply in the Bruach na hAbhann estate in Killeen pending its taking in charge by Uisce Eireann. Water Services are engaging with Uisce Eireann in order to get the estate taken in charge.”

“To me it’s a load of waffle,” said Cllr Mullins.

He said if works are required they should just be carried out.

“It’s a ludicrous situation,” claimed Cllr Mullins.

“What are we saying? That we are engaging with them?” he asked.

Cllr Mullins said he wanted to liaise directly with Mr Barrett on the issue.

Independent Cllr Aisling Moran wanted to know how much money has been spent on water related work at the estate.

“There is outages there constantly of water,” she said.

“I would say it would be cheaper to put a new system in than keep fixing it,” she added.

“You all know Irish Water aren’t easy to deal with,” said Fianna Fail Cllr Paschal McEvoy.

The issue was discussed at the last meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
