The Community Wetlands Forum is hosting a one-day event in Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Thursday 8 June which will explore finance and governance models for community-led peatland restoration in Ireland.

The Community Wetlands Forum is a platform for community-led wetland conservation groups based on the principles of community development. It has over 40 community group members across the country, including the Abbeyleix Bog Project.

It says the increasing interest in peatland restoration by private finance presents new challenges and opportunities. The conference will allow those present to explore finance and governance models for community led peatland restoration and how communities can be leaders in this space.

There will be presentations from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Peatland Finance Ireland, social finance providers, community led restoration projects, the Irish Environmental Network, Wild Atlantic Nature and Bord na Móna.

The organisers say it will offer an opportunity to hear the possibilities as well as drawbacks and concerns associated with private sector finance, including carbon credits.

The Community Wetlands Forum says it does not yet have a position on this question, and is keen to facilitate discussions between communities, policy makers and researchers.

The Community Wetlands Forum Development Officer is Mícheál Callaghan.

“Given the sensitivities at play, it is important that communities are aware of developments in this area and can be centre stage in any developments relating to the future of our peatlands,” he said.

At lunchtime, there will be an opportunity to have a walk on Abbeyleix Bog and see first hand its success and significant social, climate, biodiversity and wellbeing benefits for the community of Abbeyleix and beyond.

There will be ample time for questions and discussion after presentations, in what will be a two-way discussion and exploration of the important topics of finance and governance.

There is no cost to attend, but places are limited and participants are asked to register in advance. More details on www.communitywetlandsforum.ie/events or email micheal@irishrurallink.ie
