New and improved fire fighting facilities are being planned for two towns in Laois.

Plans are being drawn up for a new Fire Station in Stradbally while there are plans to upgrade the Mountmellick Fire Station.

Plans are advancing to provide a new Fire Station for Stradbally. A tender competition was held to appoint the Design Team. It closed on July 10 and submissions are being assessed.

In Mountmellick,  plans are being drawn up for the Mountmellick Fire Station upgrade. The plans are expected to be brought before the Municipal District Committee in the coming weeks.

Laois County Fire and Rescue responded to 363 emergency incidents so far this year.

The figures were revealed in the Monthly Management report at the latest meeting of Laois County Council.

Portlaoise remains the busiest station in the county with 166 emergency response callouts, followed by Stradbally with 69, Mountmellick with 63, Portarlington with 60, Mountrath with 52, Rathdowney with 36 and Duurrow with 32.

While there were 363 incidents, the total number of callouts from all stations is higher as some of the calls required responses from more than one station in the county.

Of the 363 callouts, 137 related to fires, 161 were classified as special service incidents and 65 were deemed false alarms.
