Laois County Council will examine the possibility of installing a pedestrian crossing in Ballyrbittas.
Fine Gael Cllr PJ Kelly requested the move which he said would go some way to slowing traffic.
He asked in a motion “that Laois County Council install a pedestrian crossing in Ballybrittas Village as this would also help in slowing down traffic where 90% ignore the speed limit signs which are there already.”
In a written response, Senior Executive Engineer, Road Design Office, James Dowling said:
“Laois County Council Road Design Department will investigate the possibility of installing a pedestrian crossing in Ballybrittas.”
“A lot of people are looking for a pedestrian crossing in the village there,” said Cllr Kelly.
He undertook his own survey at Ballybrittas and noted that 67 of the 70 vehicles he recorded approaching Ballybrittas from Portlaoise were speeding.
“The reason three of them didn’t is because there was a tractor in front of two cars,” he told the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District..
“It is a torment there for a long time now and I am happy this might be a solution,” he said.
Sinn Fein Cllr Aidan Mullins supported the motion and said he believed it was important. He asked the council to arrange a traffic survey.
