They also advised gun owners to safely secure and store their firearms.
“So we remind those that are applying for firearms or have received a cover note to pay their firearms licences to do so without delay.
If you are a holder of a licenced firearm please take note of your responsibilities around the Security, Storage, Use and Handling of Firearms,” Gardai said.
“Remove the rifle bolt or disassemble shotgun, store component parts separately in secure locations.
Always store your firearm parts and ammunition separately and out of reach of children.
Never leave your firearm in an unattended motor vehicle,” they stated.
“Always unload when not in use and carry the firearm in the broken or action open position.
Special care should be taken when crossing boundaries and climbing obstacles on sporting occasions,” gardai said.
“Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and have decided to fire. Never point a weapon at another person in jest or in a direction where accidental discharge could harm,” they added.
