The elderly pedestrian who was fatally injured in a road collision in Laois on Monday has been named locally.
Seamus O'Riordan, aged in his 70's, died after being struck by a lorry, near a service station on Chapel Street on Monday evening, November 27, just before 5pm.
Mr O'Riordan who will be mourned by a wide circle of family and friends in the town, was a single man who was retired after a lifetime of hard work.
He had served many years and is familiar to older generations as the television repair man for Fennelly's jewellers. He later went on to work in a factory in Kildare and then on to the An Post sorting office in Portlaoise before taking retirement.
Cllr Paddy Bracken has offered sympathies to Mr O'Riordan's family, which includes three brothers and two sisters, as well as nieces and nephews and other relatives.
"He was a decent hardworking quiet man. A part of the town that you would see every day out walking," he said.
Mr O'Riordan had been out on one of his walks when the tragic collision happened next to the service station.
Gardaí are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and are appealing for witnesses.
