A pair of antique torcheres or candle holders from Ballyfin House are going under the hammer in Laois at the renowned Sheppards auction rooms in Durrow.

Sheppards are selling the pair of 19th-century Chinese carved torcheres on Thursday, March 7 which is the final day of their Paradigms And The Unexpected Auction.

From Ballyfin House, they have profusely carved stems on elephant supports, surmounted by Oriental figures.

The estimated €3,000 to €5,000

Ballyfin House is part of Ballyfin Demesne is a 600-acre estate. The house is a neo-classical mansion built by Sir Charles Coote in the 1820s.

It was a secondary school for much of the 20th Century. After the school closed it was restored and in May 2011, it opened its doors as a country house hotel.
