A new report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows that 75% of septic tanks in Laois that failed inspections have been fixed by the end of 2023.
The EPA published their Domestic Waste Water Treatment System Inspections 2023 report which reveals 93 septic tanks in Laois failed inspections between 2013 and 2023.
The report also outlines the progress made by Laois County Council in addressing the failures with 75% of these tanks fixed by the end of last year. The local authority was required to undertake ten inspections across the county last year and went above their target by inspecting 11 septic tanks.
Nationally nearly half of all septic tanks tested in Ireland in 2023 failed inspections and the EPA has warned that failure to fix faulty septic tanks cannot be allowed to continue and that enforcement by local authorities is inconsistent and needs to improve.
The report noted that 80% of septic tanks that failed during the 2013–2023 period are fixed which is an improvement from 75% in 2021.
