Number of births in Laois fall with majority of women now having babies in their thirties

The number of births registered in the county in 2023 was 958.

The number of births and deaths registered in County Laois both fell last year, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). 


The number of births registered in the county in 2023 was 958, down from 980 in 2022, with slightly more baby girls being born (480) compared to boys (478). 


The highest number of women were giving birth in Laois between the ages of 30 - 34 (323) followed by 35-39 (279). There were 77 women over the age of 40 that gave birth in the county last year which remains unchanged compared to 2022. 
The only age bracket to see an increase in births was 20-24 year olds with 85 mothers giving birth compared to 69 in 2022. 

The number of deaths registered in Laois in 2023 fell by 4% from 517 in 2022 to 495 last year. 


In terms of the cause of deaths the CSO data shows cancerous tumours accounted for 166 deaths,  Diseases of the Circulatory System accounted for 113,  Diseases of the Respiratory system (55), External causes of injury and poisoning (15) and all other causes accounted for 146 deaths.
