Abbeyleix Further Education & Training Centre.
Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) has lodged plans with Laois County Council for temporary classroom accommodation at Abbeyleix Further Education & Training Centre due to an increase in student numbers attending the facility.
LOETB is seeking permission to develop a single storey temporary prefabricated unit at the centre on the Mountrath Road, consisting of two classrooms and new external ramp and steps, together with all associated site works.
Planning documents lodged this week state: "The proposed temporary prefabricated classroom accommodation serves as a short term, immediate urgent response to the increase of students attending Abbeyleix FETC. This unit is intended to be replaced with permanent accommodation going forward.
"At present, the multi-storey facility provides recognised QQI full and part-time programmes including Post Leaving Cert and above for adults. The centre focuses on the disciplines of Art, Business, Healthcare, Science and Horticulture with developmental pathways into further/higher education and employment. The college operates throughout the week while students attend classes, avail of the designated study room and canteen.
"The provision of this classroom accommodation would enable the centre to provide adequate additional learning spaces and ensure those choosing to pursue further education will begin their tuition without delay."
