An online fundraising drive has begun to fight the development of a windfarm which is planned for Kilkenny close to the border with Laois.

The Ballylacken Wind Farm is located in Kilkenny but is just 3.5km from Ballinakill. It would consist of 12 Wind Turbines of 170m overall tip height in the townlands of Byrnesgrove; Commons; Ballymartin; Ballynalacken; Ballyouskill and Loughill, County Kilkenny.

According to the project’s website, “the turbines are proposed for a location on the Castlecomer Plateau between Castlecomer (4km) and Ballyragget (5km) and 3.5km south of Ballinakill. The villages of Ballyouskill and Attanagh are located 3km and 4 km respectively to the west of the turbines.

'No to Ballynalacken Windfarm' has started the fundraiser on gofundme.com and has set a target of raising €10,000.

"The natural beauty and historical significance of the Castlecomer Plateau in North Kilkenny, South Laois are under threat. The proposed construction of 12 wind turbines, each towering at 170 meters, in the townlands of Ballynalacken, Ballymartin, Ballyouskill, Loughill, and Byrnesgrove poses a serious risk to our beloved landscape and community," they say.

"The Castlecomer Plateau is renowned for its stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and tranquil environment. The introduction of massive wind turbines will irreversibly alter the visual and ecological balance of this cherished area.

"This region is steeped in history, with many sites of archaeological and cultural significance.

"To stop the construction of these wind turbines, we need professional assistance in both legal and scientific fields. This will help us build a robust case to present to the relevant authorities and stakeholders, demonstrating the significant negative impact these turbines will have on our community."
