Ukrainians in Laois protest for peace at SS Peter & Paul's Church in Portlaoise.
The number of Ukrainian war refugees who fled to Laois from Russia's war continues to rise but at a slower rate than earlier in the invasion of their country direct by Vladmir Putin.
The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published on October 24 show there were 1,577 Ukrainians in Laois by September 29 this year. The latest figure represents about a 14% increase on the same time in 2023.
The CSO has published the latest data on the number of people seeking refuge in Ireland in the 14th edition of its Arrivals from Ukraine in Ireland Series.
The new figures contrast with a report from early 2024 which showed that there were 1,441 arrivals from Ukraine into Laois by February 4 this year. That was up 65% on the 873 arrivals into the county as of February 12, 2023.
There was a small rise number of new Ukrainian arrivals in Laois over the summer and early autumn of 2024. The CSO reported that there were 1,557 Ukrainians in Laois by June 2 this year.
The Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District accommodates the highest number of people given Ireland's protection. At the end of September, 624 people lived in the east Laois district.
There are 476 Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTP) in the Portlaoise Municipal District. It also takes in Abbeyleix and stretches to the Kilkenny border. The number of Ukrainians in the district has fallen.
The Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District is the biggest in Laois as it stretches from the Offaly border to the boundaries with Tipperary and Kilkenny. There were 477 refugees from the Russian invasion in the district this by the end of September.
Rathdowney is in the Borris district. A modular housing estate for Ukrainian refugees to accommodate 168 people was completed in late 2023.
The number of children from Ukraine is steady with 353 enrolled in schools in September. Of the children now here, 218 are in primary school and 135 are in secondary school.
There are 520 hosts in Laois who received the Accommodation Recognition Payment and Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection from Ukraine living in accommodation.
Commenting on the release, Dylan Morrissey, Statistician, said: "Women and men aged 20 years and over, made up 46% and 24% of arrivals respectively, while 30% were people aged under 20 years. More than half of the 46,668 BoTPs who attended an Intreo employment support event noted that English language proficiency was a challenge in securing employment."
Kenmare in Co. Kerry had the highest number of associated arrivals from Ukraine at 2,783. analysis also shows that the rate per 100 of the population ranges across all LEAs in the country from 0.24% to 11.43%. The LEA with the highest rate was Ennistimon in Co. Clare."
