The number of houses commenced in Laois is up 43% so far this year, according to new figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
The data relates to house commencements between January and October. Over that 10 month period in Laois there were 1,186 house commencements, up from 826 over the same period in 2023.
The busiest month in 2024 was April when 576 homes went under construction in the one month.
During the summer things quietened down in the county but picked up again in September when 212 home commencements were recorded followed by 103 in October.
Nationally 53,256 homes commenced in the first ten months of 2024 with 4,249 in October.
Of all homes commenced in the first ten months of 2024, 37% were in the four Dublin local authorities. By local authority, the most homes commenced this year so far have been in Dublin City (6,655) followed by Fingal (5,368) and South Dublin (4,469). The lowest number of homes commenced were in Leitrim (91), Carlow (197) and Longford (243).
