Nursing home death unexplained.
An enquiry is to be carried out into the death of a resident at a nursing home in Laois.
Laois Gardaí have confirmed that they were called to Droimnin Nursing Home in Stradbally on St Patrick's Day following an incident involving a woman in her 80s who was a resident of the home.
Nursing home operators are required under nursing home regulations to inform the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa), which regulates and licenses nursing homes, within three working days of an unexpected death.
Hiqa confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live that they had been informed of an unexpected death at the nursing home by its operators as required under nursing home regulations.
Hiqa is required to carry out a follow-up enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death which it confirmed may involve an inspection of the premises in Stradbally.
The cause of death has yet to be established. Gardaí are preparing a file for the Laois Coroner.
Located off the N80 at Brockley Park, Droimnin has a Hiqa licensed capacity for 70 occupants. The most recent Hiqa Inspection Report was published in January 2025.
