€3 million investment in social housing for Laois

A construction project underway.

Laois is set to receive a €3 million investment to meet social housing needs in the county following a government announcement on Monday, March 31.

This includes funding for new-build social homes and for second-hand social housing acquisitions.

The funding for Laois is part of an overall allocation of €436m for social housing across the country, announced by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne T.D.

Welcoming the news, Portlaoise TD, Deputy Willie Aird said the challenges are real and the demand is urgent in relation to delivering social housing projects.

“The funding announced today for County Laois, is a vital part of our ongoing efforts to address housing shortages across the country. The delivery of new homes in Laois will be facilitated by the €3 million investment and will help to ensure that local communities have the necessary resources to address housing needs," said Deputy Aird.

“Alongside new builds, we are also prioritising the acquisition of second-hand homes, enabling local authorities like Laois County Council to quickly bring additional homes into the social housing stock. This strategy is about acting swiftly to address immediate housing needs in Laois and for the people of Laois.

"This funding will also support initiatives that help prevent homelessness, and will focus on tenant-in-situ acquisition.
“It will support the most vulnerable, including older people, those with disabilities, and those transitioning from homelessness services.

The latest figures from the Department of housing show that there has been a significant spike in homeless numbers in Laois in recent months.

In February 51 individuals required emergency accommodation,  a 45% jump on January's figures.
