Sinn Féin has nominated Portlaoise's Maria McCormack to Oireachtas committees

Laois Senator Maria McCormack has been appointed by her party to an Oireachtas committee on housing and has vowed to put tackling the housing crisis as a top priority.

In a statement to the Leinster Express/Laois Live the Portlaoise based politician announced she has been appointed to the Housing and Social Protection Committees.

"Sinn Féin are ready to get down to business and work hard to deliver for workers, families, and communities," said Senator McCormack.

"Tackling the housing crisis, improving supports for carers and people with disabilities, and ensuring fair access to social welfare are just some of the key priorities I’ll be focusing on—while holding the Government to account on the issues that matter most.

"I’ll be working as part of a strong, all-Ireland Sinn Féin team to bring the voices of Laois into the Seanad, ensure the interests of ordinary people are put first, and help build a better, fairer, united Ireland."

This is the latest announcement in a series of appointments of Laois TDs to roles within Oireachtas Committees. Fianna Fáil TD Sean Fleming has been nominated as chair of a committee on infrastructure. He will also sit as chair of the working group of committee chairs and will sit on the budgetary oversight committee when established. Fine Gael's Willie Aird will sit on the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food and the Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection, Rural and Community Affairs. Meanwhile Independent Republican Brian Stanley has been appointed to the National Security and Defence Committee.
