Malicious false alarms to Laois Fire Service more than triples

House, chimney and motor vehicle fires most common in 2024

Laois County Fire & Rescue Service give warning

The number of malicious false alarms made to Laois County Council's Fire Service more than tripled last year, according to new figures. 


Statistics from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage reveal that there were 157 false alarm incidents in Laois last year that members of the fire service attended, up from 139 in 2023. 


The number of calls which turned out to be false alarms that were made maliciously increased to 14 in 2024, up from just four the previous year.


House fires, chimney fires and fires in motor vehicles were the most common. There were 36 chimney fires, 34 other types of fires in houses and 29 in motor vehicles. 


In relation to house fires, rubbish burning was the cause in 33 cases, three fires were caused by cooking and heating, twelve from electrical equipment, three from other equipment, two from electrical wiring installation, 15 were malicious and 115 had unknown causes.  


In total Laois County Council Fire Service attended 857 incidents in 2024, an increase from 773 in 2023. There was one fire related fatality in Laois in 2024 and Laois Fire Service attended 140 road traffic accidents.
