Tributes were paid following the death of former Fianna Fail Councillor Edmund (Eamonn) Rafter.
A farmer from Knockanoran, Durrow, Eamonn was very well regarded in Durrow and beyond.
Laois TD Sean Fleming described Eamonn as a personal friend and said he knew him for over 40 years.
“He was a gentleman full stop, from beginning to end. I am sorry to hear he passed away,” he remarked.
“He listened to everybody and he always did everything he could for the people of Durrow,” said Deputy Fleming.
He said Eamon represented the people of Durrow and the surrounding areas and the people of Laois on Fianna Fail’s National Executive for many years. He expressed his hope that he was now at peace and reunited with his late wife Dolly.
Independent Cllr Ollie Clooney was saddened to learn of the death. He described Eamonn as “a great man to have a chat with” and a great communicator. He said he was also a great man with horses.
“He done a lot of travelling and wasn’t shy of spending a few bob,” Cllr Clooney recalled.
“If there was a worthy cause in the area Eamonn wouldn’t be shy to put his hand in his pocket,” he said.
Cllr Clooney recalled meeting him before the last local elections when Eamonn informed him that he would get his number two after Cllr Seamus McDonald. Cllr Clooney said he respected and appreciated his honesty.
