IN PICTURES: Laois TY Students shine at annual SciFest Showcase

The Portlaoise College Students produced 44 projects

Portlaoise College was a hub of innovation and excitement this week as Transition Year students took part in SciFest.

The annual celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths encourages young people to explore curiosity through hands-on learning and research. With its focus on real-world problem solving and student-led investigation, SciFest has become an integral part of the Laois school’s STEM education programme.

The day began with TY students gathering in the foyer where an impressive 44 projects were set up for judging. Exhibits ranged from climate-focused investigations to inventive technological solutions, each reflecting the hard work and creativity of the students involved. Parents were invited in to view the projects and, much like the judges, were highly impressed by the standard on display. Click NEXT to view more images. Read more below.

Principal Noel Daly praised the students’ dedication and the value of events like SciFest for developing confidence and scientific thinking. “Our TYs put immense effort into their projects and it really shows. SciFest gives them the chance to think independently, explore ideas and present their work with pride. We are delighted to host it each year and to see our students rise to the challenge,” he said.

Special thanks were extended to SciFest, Aubren, RCSI and Laois County Council for their support in providing judges and assisting with organisation. Each project was reviewed by two judges and five awards were presented on the day, recognising excellence in areas such as clean climate and technology, as well as the overall first to third place prizes. All participants now have the opportunity to further develop their work and enter SciFest@College in 2026.

As the day drew to a close, students gathered in the PE hall for the much-anticipated announcement of results. The judges deliberated for nearly an hour, a reflection of the exceptionally high standard across all entries. When the winners were finally revealed, the hall erupted in warm applause from classmates and teachers alike.

The event proved to be a memorable experience for everyone involved and a proud moment for Portlaoise College. Thanks were offered to the students, teachers and judges whose contributions made the day such a success.
