Road safety concerns outside a popular Laois pub have been raised by local councillors.

Councillor Ben Brennan and Councillor Vivienne Phelan requested that a number of works be done to improve road safety outside The Mall pub in Killeshin at the recent meeting of the Portarlington / Graiguecullen MD.

Cllr Brennan asked that Laois County Council install new road markings and signage on the R430, as he described it as a "dangerous spot."

In a separate motion, Cllr Phelan appealed to the council to install public lighting at The Mall as there are currently visibility issues along the R430 road where the L7916 Olderrig and L7916 Clonmore join.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Phelan said: "It's a very dangerous spot. There's very fast moving traffic on one road and then there's two other roads where it's slow moving. You can't see very well if you're pulling out from either of the junctions."

Senior Executive Engineer for the Portarlington / Graiguecullen MD, Tom Drennan, said that Laois County Council has determined that line marking renewal is required at the junction.

He said that this is expected to be completed "over the immediate term."

In regards to installing lighting on the road, Laois County Council's Road Design team will meet with Cllr Phelan and carry out a safety assessment.

Drennan told Cllr Phelan: "Any proposed works will be subject to funding."
