Flashing ground warning lights ahead for Portlaoise pedestrian crossings

Two pedestrian crossings on the Dublin road in Portlaoise 'not safe'

Pedestrian crossing at Killeshin Hotel

Flashing lights embedded across the road at pedestrian crossings are to be trialled in Portlaoise.

The lights which are built into the road surface are already in place in Waterford and Carlow, and now coming to Laois.

The announcement follows a motion tabled by Cllr Willie Aird at the October meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District.

“They are supposed to be brilliant. I'm getting loads of complaints especially about the Killeshin pedestrian crossing, you're on top of it before you see it.

“At school we all learnt the Safe Cross Code now people go straight across, and on bikes and scooters. It's a nightmare for motorists,” Cllr Aird said.

Director of Services Simon Walton agrees that not all crossings in the town are well lit and said that the council is keen to trial the embedded flashing lights in Portlaoise.
