A Laois village is to be considered for traffic lights, at a staggered crossroads.

Ballinakill has a population of less than 500 residents but traffic lights are needed, according to a local Fine Gael councillor.

The village is home to many special visitor attractions like its outdoor heated swimming pool, historic Heywood Gardens and woodland walks, a fishing pond as well as Heywood Community school.

Cllr Barry Walsh was absent from the February meeting of Laois County Council due to a family bereavement, but his colleagues tabled his motion at his request.

It requests that the council "consider installing a traffic light system at the staggered crossroads at the bottom of Stanhope Street".
