'No lighting and awful speeding' outside Laois GAA Club

The lack of public lighting and high incidents of speeding in Acragar, Mountmellick was raised with Laois County Council

'No lighting and awful speeding' outside Laois GAA Club

A Laois Councillor has complained that the lack of public lighting outside of Mountmellick GAA Club 'must be addressed', along with 'shocking' incidents of speeding in the area.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Paddy Bracken brought this issue to the attention of Laois County Council this week, calling for the installation of speed ramps in the Acragar area.

"I think there's no doubt to anyone that the speed of traffic on that road is shocking," Cllr Bracken said.

"We have a very busy GAA grounds in Mountmellick, there is always activity there with children, traffic is there every day with people in and out of the GAA grounds.

"We also have St Joseph's Cemetery which is a busy spot as well. It's very scares of public lighting there. I met with a Council engineer there and we did a walk on the route, we realised there is a scarcity of lights, they are all infill lights really," he said.

"There are areas with no lighting at all there. It needs to be addressed. I plead with you to try and do something on it, and we need a couple of ramps on that road to slow down the traffic, because it is shocking.

"They are all going the back way to Portlaoise on the ridge road, and it never ends. It needs to be looked at because something serious will happen. I look forward to this being addressed," Cllr Bracken finished.

This motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Ollie Clooney, and was supported by fellow Fianna Fáil Cllr Seamus McDonald.

"I also support this notice of motion," said Cllr McDonald, Cathaoirleach.

"There are funerals there that have to use this road often and it's very very dangerous, even on the Mountmellick side of the graveyard. There needs to be a ramp there as well," he said.

Mr Rory O'Callaghan, SEE with Public Lighting Section and Road Design has said that the Council will carry out a survey.

"The Council will carry out a speed survey outside St. Joseph's Cemetery and the GAA Club. The provision of traffic calming measures will be considered pending the results of the speed survey," Mr O'Callaghan replied.

"The Public Lighting Section will meet with Cllr Paddy Bracken on site and assess the requirements for additional lighting," he finished.

This motion was tabled at the March sitting of Laois County Council's Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.
