The Mountmellick Christmas Lights Committee is launching a new fundraiser initiative that will light up the town and remember loved ones.
Following a discussion on Facebook, the idea was born to pursue the new fundraiser this year calling on people to sponsor a light bulb in memory of a loved one.
Maura Reddin is the Chairperson of the Mountmellick Lights Committee.
“For the past number of years, the committee has been unable to extend the lights in the town or introduce coloured bulbs due to a lack of financial resources.
“This year, we are running ‘Sponsor a Light Bulb’ initiative. The idea is that member of the public sponsors a yellow coloured LED light bulb for €5. All the coloured bulbs ‘purchased’ under the initiative will be lit in the square area surrounding the Christmas tree.
"The bulbs will be a yellow colour so they are easily identified. A list of the names will be taken and a memory ribbon will hang from the barrier in the square representing each bulb.
“Essentially, there will be a memory ribbon for every coloured bulb lit in the square to represent people's deceased loved ones," she said.
The committee is also hoping to introduce more lights and colour in the town this year, in specific areas. The initiative will run for three weeks, kicking off on Friday, November 16 where the committee will have a stall in Supervalu Mountmellick from 10 am – 7 pm.
