Concerned residents were joined by politicians outside a Post Office in Laois, to try and stop it moving to a supermarket on the town's outskirts.

Mountmellick Post Office is set to leave its 114 year old base beside the town's square, to move into a unit opening into SuperValu supermarket, on the edge of the town at Connolly Street. It is due to move over the June Bank Holiday weekend, An Post has confirmed.

The protest group which includes traders, gathered on site at 9am on Tuesday May 14.

Traders say the move could cause shops to close in the town, it will cause another vacant building, and will cause access problems for pensioners on the far side of the town from the supermarket.
