Man was abusive when challenged over loose horses at Laois cemetery

Portlaoise District Court

A man escaped a conviction for being “abusive” when challenged about loose horses in a cemetery.

Patrick Tuohy (22) of Dysert Beg, Mountrath, is accused of engaging in threatening and abusive behavior at Dysert Beg on September 27 last.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said the accused had brought €500 by way of compensation to a sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the money could be sent to the parish priest. He said the defendant had no previous convictions.

Judge Susan Fay said the money should be spent on the upkeep of the graveyard.  She said she recalled the case and the defendant had created a difficult situation.

“There were loose horses in the cemetery… when Mr Tuohy was challenged he was abusive”, he said.

Judge Fay said the €500 will go to the people who look after the cemetery. Noting the defendant had fully cooperated as she applied the probation act.
