'Please keep an eye out' - Animal rescue urges people to shelter pets and strays during cold spell

An Irish animal rescue is urging people to look out for pets and strays during the ongoing spell of cold weather.

My Lovely Horse Rescue (MLHR) called on people to help animals survive the low temperatures in the wake of a Status Yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning issued for all of Ireland.

In a post published on their Facebook page yesterday (January 16), a spokesperson for MLHR stated, "Please keep an eye out for animals that need help in this weather.

"Offer them shelter if you can, there are so many abandoned dogs and cats that need help, break the ice in water buckets in fields for horses. [It] breaks all our hearts to think of them suffering, [the] next few nights are going to be extremely cold and icy."

According to Met Éireann, very cold temperatures with severe frost and icy stretches can be expected countrywide, leading to animal welfare issues as well as difficult travelling conditions.

A Status Yellow Snow-Ice Alert is also in place in Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry.
