Ireland's favourite and most popular baby names revealed with shock top spot for boys

Ireland's favourite and most popular baby names of 2025 have been revealed.

Rían and Lily top the list, with Jack, Noah, James, and Oisín completing the top five for boys.

Éabha, Fiadh, Grace, and Sadie make up the top five most popular girls' names for last year.

Rían took the top spot for the first time since the Central Statistics Office began recording favourite names.

"Rían was the most popular baby boys’ name in Ireland in 2025 and reached the top spot for the first time since our series began in 1964. It has been increasing in popularity since 2018 and entered the top five in 2021," Seán O’Connor, Statistician in the Vital Statistics Section of the CSO, said.

2025 was also the first year since 2007, with the exception of 2016, that Jack did not top the list.

Lily has replaced the previous year’s top girl name, Sophie, which now ranks joint sixth alongside Emily.

"Looking at girls’ names, Lily claimed the number one position as most popular girls’ name in Ireland for the first time since our series began in 1964. Lily first started to gain popularity in 1997 when 15 girls were given the name, and it has been steadily climbing up the ranks since then. It first appeared in the top 10 in 2011 and in 2025 it replaced Sophie as the most popular name for girls," Seán noted.

In terms of popularity, the name Raya rose fastest in the rankings for 2025, from 213th place in 2024 to 99th in 2025.

Naoise for boys also proved to be popular, rising 74 places to 88th most popular last year.

There were also a number of new entries added to the top 100 list, including Levi, Dáire, Naoise, Conall, Elijah, and Teidí for boys, and Ríadh, Gracie, Mabel, Arabella, Nancy, and Raya for girls.

Murphy was the most common surname for babies born in 2025, followed by Kelly and O’Brien.
