Gardai in the Laois-Offaly Division have set up incident rooms in Portlaoise, Tullamore and Birr in order to mange the extraordinary weather event which the country is experiencing.
Garda Inspector Maria Conway issued an update.
"We currently have an orange weather warning but anticipate weather conditions will get considerably worse in the next few hours," the Gardai said in a statement.
"There is a heavy covering of snow in both counties and we ask that all unnecessary travel be avoided. All our motorway and national routes remain open, however motorists are advised to exercise caution.
"We are participating in ongoing meetings with other State agencies to provide a response as required. Be prepared in your homes and keep in contact with elderly and vulnerable persons," they advised.
Laois Offaly Garda Prevention Officer Graham Kavangh said it is important to reassure the public that gardaí will be in a position to meet needs on various fronts in conjunction with the Community, Text Alert and Neighbourhood Watch groups as well as through the Irish Farmers Association.
