The community group who have brought RTÉ One show Operation Transformation to Laois this spring, has launched a Couch to 5k fitness programme, in conjunction with the show and Stradbally GAA club.

SVT Activity and Wellness Hub, which keeps Stradbally, Vicarstown and Timahoe fit and connected with community activities, is holding the ideal New Year's incentive to get Laois up and running again.

The free training courses start this Tuesday evening, January 10 at Stradbally GAA Track, Bill Delaney Park, from 7.30pm. Come early to register. The floodlights will be on thanks to the Ireland Lights Up GAA community fitness project.

Qualified fitness trainer Moez Toumi will be energising everyone to reach the 5km distance, be it by walking, jogging or running.

Weekly training will continue every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7.30pm, and the cameras might even turn up. Participants will also be encouraged to take part in the weekly ParkRun at Vicarstown canal every Saturday morning at 9.30am.

"Our next active venture in conjunction with Stradbally GAA and Opperation Transformation is this couch to 5k with @⁨Moez⁩ starting this Tuesday evening.

"Now…..Don’t be put off if you think your not able for it….(who is after eating our way through Christmas ) it’s for total beginners or those wanting to be able to move a bit faster It will be a great social event, a good way of staying connected through the winter months, and a nice cup of tea when we are done.

"So please come out and give it a try. No-one ever regretted getting up off the couch. Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday," SVT Activity and Wellness Hub say.

They note that participants with underlying conditions or who are new to exercise, should check with their GP before commencing any new fitness regime.
