An expected vote in the EU to phase out the selling of CO2 emitting cars and vans by 2035 is a historic milestone in Europe’s journey towards climate neutrality, according to an MEP for Laois.

Fianna Fáil's Billy Kelleher, a member of the centrist Renew Europe Group, was speaking ahead of a final vote in the European Parliament to confirm the agreement reached with the European Council in recent weeks.

“By setting a target for 100% zero-emission cars and vans by 2035, the European Union is taking a decisive and necessary step in its efforts to make the EU climate neutral by 2050, while at the same time cutting down on air pollution.

“Having clearly defined, and well sign-posted progressive targets will spur on investments in zero-emissions cars and vans. Car manufacturers now know the direction of travel and can, and should, now invest more heavily in these types of vehicles. There is no excuse anymore.

“More investment means more innovation leading to greater affordability for consumers. As innovation continues, we will see growth in the distances e-cars can be driven for, and a reduction in range anxiety among motorists.

“This is an important step, and I am glad to see that the Parliament and the Council faced down intense lobbying from the car and fossil fuel industries,” concluded the Ireland South MEP in a statement.

Ireland South takes in most of Munster but includes Laois and Offaly.
