Fury in Laois over state of busy road strewn with rocks

Damage to car on south Laois road.

Frustrated drivers in Laois have reacted angrily to the state of a local road due to rocks after a motorist highlighted car damage.

Tara Gavin took to social media to highlight the problem which she claimed damaged her car on Thursday, September 28 in the Rathdowney area.

"Hit a bunch of rocks around Middlemount yesterday evening, they blew my tyre and have caused other damage. I hope no one else hit these rocks on the road," she said.

Ms Gavin thanked two gentlemen who stopped and helped to get her way again but she estimates that €500 worth of damage was done to her vehicle.

She indicated that the problem was caused by rocks on the road which she thinks fell from a vehicle.

"We wanted to clear them but was unsafe to do so as it was a blind spot," she said.

Linda Walsh believed that HGVs are causing the rock problems.

"They get dislodged when lorries have to pull in when meeting other traffic but it's impossible to move them with the constant speed on that part of the road," she said.

The post also drew a response from others including Tim Duggan.

"Rathdowney to Ballacolla Middlemount road is a disgrace and should be upgraded and on the bends going into Donaghmore always has rocks," he said.

He said the Rathdowney to Borris in Ossory should also be upgraded.
