The damage the very wet winter has done to Laois roads is revealed in a Laois County Council council on repairs done in recent months in just one part of the county.

The engineer's progress report to the Graiguecullen / Portarlington Municipal District meeting in February said road surfacing repairs were carried right out across the district.

It said pothole were filled in: Milltown, Boley, Kilgorey, Bilboa, Cow Park, Ballylinan, Cappanafeacle, Cremorgan, R426 Timahoe, Fossy, Aughanure, Barrowhouse, Kilmoroney, Knockbeg, Hollymount, Ballyhide, Springhill, Luggacurren, Shanragh, Crissard, Slatt Upper, Fairymount and Crosskeys.

Road surface repairs were carried out at Killeshin / Rossmore (L-7911) where about 280 metres of surface repairs were carried out to edges of road.

Repairs were also needed at Mayo and Wolfhill where road crossings were reinstated following drainage works. Surface repairs were also done at the R420/R445 Killinure junction.

Drainage works were completed at Kelly’s Lane R430 with a roadside gulley installed, pipe to drain, drains cleaned, and water cuts opened. Drainage works completed at Joe’s Road, Cappalug where a collapsed culvert was repaired and roadside gulley installed.

Drains were cleared and water cuts opened at Lower Rossmore, Milltown, Castletown, The Glen Road, Boley, Gracefield, Ballyharmon, Luggacurren, Shanragh.

Water cuts were carried out across the Municipal District to prevent road flooding. Road signs were cleaned and drains and storm lines were jet washed at multiple locations.

County Councillors told officials that roads were in a poor state due to the amount of rain this winter.
