Niamh Ryan and her father Toney Ryan, from Pike of Rushall near Castletown, organised the fourth annual
Road To Recovery fundraiser on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
This run is close to the family's heart as Toney was diagnosed with skin cancer, and successfully overcame it.
Mountrath Fire brigade led the group out to start their run in support of the cause and
Portlaoise fire station set up outside their own fire station to support the run as well, Niamh told
Laois Live.
"The community spirit in Castletown has been savage, " said Niamh, "we had an auction and a raffle with prizes that were given to us so we were overwhelmed with the amount of support locally from businesses."
"When we counted yesterday we had €6,000 with money still coming in," Niamh said.
Friends of Portlaoise Hospital is a non-profit organisation which aims to provide the hospital with much needed supplies.
The fundraiser is open for another three weeks, for those who still wish to donate can do so through

Niamh explained how her father Toney had been in hospital for six weeks and the hospital had "looked after him so well," so this was their way of giving back.
