Lea Castle Portarlington
New public lighting is being sought on a road on the outskirts of Portarlington.
Sinn Fein Cllr Aidan Mullins requested the lighting in a motion at a recent council meeting.
He asked “that Laois County Council install a public light on Lea Road outside Portarlington at the turn off for Lea Castle.”
A written response by Senior Engineer Paul McLoughlin was read by Senior Executive Engineer, Philip McVeigh.
“Laois County Council’s Road Design Staff will visit the junction, assess the need and feasibility of installing a light at this location and thereafter make arrangements as appropriate,” Mr McLoughlin wrote.
Cllr Mullins said “the local residents are adamant that that is dangerous.”
“There is a lot of traffic at this turnoff,” he explained.
“It is particularly dangerous when you are coming off that side road,” said Cllr Mullins.
Fine Gael Cllr, PJ Kelly, agreed and said it was a busy stretch of road with a rugby and soccer pitch nearby.
The motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Aisling Moran.
